How to use PDF to Markdown

PDFVelora reads the structure of your PDF and writes it out as GitHub-flavoured Markdown. Headings get # levels based on their size, bold and italic words keep their emphasis, bullet and numbered lists become Markdown lists and tables become pipe tables. Page numbers and running headers and footers are dropped, and paragraphs cut by a page break are joined again, giving you text ready for a wiki, a repository or an AI tool.

    If the PDF is scanned, select its language so the OCR reads the text correctly.

  3. Convert

    Start the conversion. The layout is analysed and rewritten as Markdown syntax.

Questions about PDF to Markdown

Which Markdown flavour do you produce?

GitHub-flavoured Markdown, with # headings, **bold**, *italic*, - and 1. lists and pipe tables. It displays correctly in most editors, wikis and static site generators. The file is UTF-8, so accents and Arabic script come through intact.

Are images included in the Markdown?

No. The .md file holds the text, headings, lists and tables; pictures are left out. If you also need the pages as images, convert the PDF with PDF to PNG.

Why convert a PDF to Markdown for AI tools?

Markdown keeps the document's structure in plain text: headings, lists and tables stay recognisable, without layout noise such as page numbers. That makes it a convenient input for chatbots, search indexes and note-taking apps.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. Pages without a text layer are read with OCR in English, French, Arabic or Spanish before the Markdown is written. If no text can be found at all, you get a message instead of an empty file.

What happens to my file after conversion?

Files are encrypted in transit and deleted automatically: after 2 hours for visitors and after 24 hours for account holders, unless you save them to My documents.
