How to use Annotate PDF

Review a PDF the way you would on paper. Drag over a passage to highlight, underline or strike it through, draw freehand with a mouse, pen or finger, and circle or box what matters before pointing at it with an arrow. Comments become real PDF comments, so their text can be read in any PDF viewer. Choose colours and line widths, search the document to find a passage, then export the annotated PDF.

  1. Upload your PDF

Drop the PDF on the page or choose it from your device. It opens in the editor once uploaded.

  2. Pick an annotation tool

Choose Highlight, Underline, Strikethrough, Draw, a shape, an arrow or Comment, and set its colour.

  3. Mark up the pages

Drag over text to mark it, draw where you need to, or click to drop a comment. Undo and Eraser fix mistakes.

  4. Export the annotated PDF

Click Export PDF to download the file with your annotations.

Questions about Annotate PDF

Will my annotations show in other PDF readers?

Yes. Highlights, underlines, drawings, shapes and arrows are written into the page itself, so they look the same in every viewer. Comments are added as standard PDF comments that any viewer can open.

Can I remove an annotation?

Yes, until you export: select it and delete it, use the Eraser, or undo. After export, highlights and drawings are part of the page, while comments remain separate PDF comments.

Which highlight colours are there?

Yellow, green, blue, pink and orange. Underlines, strikethroughs, drawings and shapes can use other colours and line widths.

Can I annotate on a phone or with a stylus?

Yes. The Draw tool follows your finger or pen, and fast strokes stay smooth on phones, tablets and pen displays.

Is annotating a PDF free?

Yes. Without an account you can run 3 tasks a day, and a free account gives you 5. Pro and Business plans have no daily limit.

What happens to my file after annotating?

Files are encrypted in transit and deleted automatically: after 2 hours for visitors and after 24 hours for account holders, unless you save them to My documents.
