How to use Chat with PDF

Upload a PDF, click Start chat and ask anything about it: a deadline in a contract, a figure in a report, the conclusion of a study. PDFVelora splits the document into passages, finds the ones that match your question and has Claude answer from them, citing the pages they come from. Click a page reference to see the passage behind it. Scanned pages are read with OCR first, and you can ask follow-up questions.

  1. Upload your PDF

    Drop the PDF on the page or choose it from your device.

  2. Start the chat

    Click Start chat. The document is read and prepared for your questions; long scans take a little longer.

  3. Ask your question

    Type a question, or pick a suggestion such as the key points or important dates.

  4. Check the sources

    Click a page reference under the answer to see the passage it rests on, then ask a follow-up.

Questions about Chat with PDF

Where do the answers come from?

From your document only. Each question retrieves the most relevant passages, and Claude answers from them and cites their pages. If the document doesn't cover the question, the answer says so rather than filling the gap with general knowledge. AI can still get things wrong, so check the cited pages before relying on an answer for an important decision.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Yes. Pages without a text layer are read with OCR before the document is indexed. English, French, Arabic and Spanish are recognised.

Can I ask in a different language from the document?

Yes. Answers come in the language of your question, so you can question an English report in French or Arabic.

Do I need an account, and what does it cost?

AI tools need a free account. Starting a chat counts as one daily task, and each answer uses AI credits: 20 a month on the free plan, 500 on Pro and 1,000 per Business user. One credit equals $0.01 of AI model cost.

What is sent to AI providers?

Nothing until you click Start chat. Then the document's text is sent to Voyage AI to be indexed, and for each question the most relevant passages go to Anthropic's Claude. Your upload is deleted automatically after 24 hours unless you save it to My documents.
